Salvia microphylla 'Maraschino'
Salvia microphylla 'Maraschino'
I like the Salvia microphyllas better for most purposes than the more common Salvia greggii. Both are from the same high desert area of Southern U.S. and Northern Mexico, and mix very well with California native plants in high-summer-heat areas.

One of the owners is an avid horsewoman, so it was nice to have the horses "pose" in the b.g. for a few photos!
Feather Reed Grass
Feather Reed Grass
This grass is used extensively through the Midwestern U.S., and I love to use it in the Central Valley for certain projects where it can act as a screen (in this case, the air conditioning unit) and a summer focal point.

One of the challenges with using a lot of stone work is using plants that can take the reflected heat, at least until shade trees mature.

It's fun to layer both for different bloom seasons and for foliage shades and forms.

We added fill soil to create a slight berm for interest and provide better drainage for certain species.

This is a large CA native groundcover, re-rooting as it goes, so it can cover a very large space unless controlled with paving or trimmed back. On the other hand, if you need it, it can cover a very large space!

Two nods to the prairie: Blanket flower and Black Eyed Susan.

Air Dryer
Air Dryer
View from in front of the back gate. The owners wanted to be able to use our plentiful solar energy to air dry their clothes. CA native Spice Bush will screen the space from the patio, and this area has direct access to the washer inside the garage to the right.
